Statutory assessments Parent Information 2026 to 2027
Statutory assessments take place at various points throughout primary school. If your child is in any of the year groups specified below, we thought it may be useful for you to have these dates in the diary. Term time leave will not be authorised during these periods, and families taking unauthorised holiday may lead to further action being taken.
Reception Baseline assessment
Schools must complete the reception baseline assessment for each child in the first 6 weeks after they enter reception.
Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
Week commencing 7 June 2027 for all children in Year 1.
This is a quick and easy word reading check of your child’s phonics knowledge. If you would like to find out a little more about how it works, take a look at this two-minute video.
Reading their reading books at home daily with your child will help give them the confidence and skills to read the sounds they need to succeed in this phonics check.
Year 2 Phonics Screening Check
Optional Key Stage 1 Tests
National Curriculum tests at Key Stage 1 are no longer statutory. Schools may choose to use assessment materials to support teacher assessment during May 2027.
These materials may include:
- Reading assessments
- Mathematics assessments
- Optional English grammar, punctuation and spelling assessments
Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check
The Multiplication Tables Check is a statutory assessment for all Year 4 pupils in England.
Assessment window: Monday 7 June to Friday 18 June 2027
What is the pass mark for the Year 4 Times Tables Test?
There is no pass mark, fail, nor expected standard threshold. It is intended that schools use their own judgement as to any actions needed after the results. At Great Malvern Primary we assess ourselves by using the average score and compare this with the national average score.
What times tables do Year 4 have to know?
By the end of Year 3 children should be fluent in the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 times tables.
By the end of Year 4, children are expected to recall multiplication facts up to 12 × 12 fluently and accurately.
A strong knowledge of times tables supports pupils' learning across many areas of mathematics, including fractions, division, percentages and problem-solving.
Key Stage 2 SATS
The end of Key Stage 2 assessments take place nationally during:
Monday 10 May to Thursday 13 May 2027
During SATs week, pupils will complete the following assessments:
- English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Paper 1: Questions
- English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Paper 2: Spelling
- English Reading
- Mathematics Paper 1: Arithmetic
- Mathematics Paper 2: Reasoning
- Mathematics Paper 3: Reasoning
It is extremely important that all Year 6 pupils attend school every day during SATs week.
Writing
Unlike reading and mathematics, writing is not assessed through a SATs test. Instead, teachers assess pupils against the national assessment framework using a range of evidence collected throughout the year.
During Year 6, pupils compile a portfolio of 6 to 8 pieces of writing across a range of genres. Teachers use this collection of work to assess pupils' ability to write effectively, accurately and consistently for different purposes and audiences. This teacher assessment forms the final judgement for writing at the end of Key Stage 2.
Non-statutory assessments
Children in other year groups will also complete end-of-year assessments. These assessments support teachers in making accurate judgements about attainment and progress and help inform future learning. The outcomes contribute to the teacher assessments used throughout the year and are not reported nationally.
